Paint Guide: All 18 Colors, Mixing Recipes and Patterns walkthrough

Almost any piece of furniture in Pokémon Pokopia can be recolored, and many items even have two separate areas you can paint. All of it goes through Smearguru, the painter Smeargle you meet in Bleak Beach. This guide covers how to unlock painting, where each base paint comes from, how to mix all 18 colors and how to collect new patterns.

How to unlock painting

  1. Reach Bleak Beach and look for Smearguru along the northern shore.
  2. Its first request is a bit of red paint. Give a Leppa Berry to a Pokémon with the Crush specialty (Pawmo is an early option) and bring the paint back.
  3. From then on, talk to Smearguru with an item and the paint in your Bag to recolor it. Since update 2.0.0 you can chain several paint jobs in one conversation.

Where each base paint comes from

Paint is made by Crush Pokémon from berries. Each berry gives a common color and, now and then, a bonus color:

BerryUsual paintBonus paint
Leppa BerryRedWhite
Chesto BerryBlueWhite
Pecha BerryPinkBlack
Rawst BerryCyanBlack
Aspear BerryYellowBlack
Lum BerryGreenWhite

White and black only appear as bonus drops, so they are the rarest. You can also buy paint directly in the shop.

All 18 colors and how to mix them

Every paint job costs two units of paint. Use two of the same for a pure color, or one of each for a mix:

ColorPaint needed
White / Red / Blue / Yellow / Green / Cyan / Pink / Black2 of the same paint
AquamarineGreen + Cyan
OrangeRed + Yellow
PurplePink + Blue
BrownRed + Green
RoseRed + Pink
LimeGreen + Yellow
BeigeWhite + Black
PlumRed + Blue
NavyBlue + Black
GrayBlue + White

Careful: white and black do not make gray in Pokopia, they make beige. For gray, mix blue and white.

Paint balloons

If you prefer to paint by yourself, buy paint balloons in the shop or craft them, then throw them at furniture or buildings. It is handy for large surfaces such as walls and roofs.

How to get more patterns

Patterns go on the fabric parts of items (cushions, curtains, beds…) and usually cost more paint. Smearguru knows a few from the start, and you collect the rest like this:

  • Dream Islands: 22 patterns are scattered across them.
  • Vespiquen: items you get by trading honey with it sometimes carry exclusive patterns. Show the item to Smearguru to learn the pattern.
  • Daily shop: patterned items you buy can be shown to Smearguru as well.
  • Reference photos: since update 2.0.0, Smearguru can learn patterns from the photos you take of items.
  • Diploma: after earning it, Smearguru teaches the Dynamic Ditto print, and Bubbly Basin adds its own patterns for Expansion Pass owners.

Tip: keep one Crush Pokémon next to a berry farm and a storage box. Crushing a full stack at a time is the fastest way to build a stock of the rare white and black paint.
